Online Abstract Submission Instructions
General Guidelines for Preparing Abstract Files
Abstracts must conform to specific size limits. The maximum number of characters
permitted is 2500. No tables, graphics or charts will be accepted with submissions.
Use the standard Times New Roman font for text and Symbol font for symbols; any other
fonts will not be accepted. Do not use a third-party symbol font. Set all text as flush
left, unjustified, wrapping text as you type. Abstracts are limited to one paragraph. Do
not place hard returns at the end of each line.
Do not include the title in the abstract text. The title will be collected on the
online form in the Title Section. Similarly, do not include authors and affiliations in
the abstract text. This data will be collected on the online form in the Author and
Additional Information Sections.
Please proofread submissions carefully for factual, typographical and grammatical
errors. Abstracts will be formatted only to fit publication requirements and will not be
edited for content in any way. If published, the abstract will appear exactly as shown on
the online system confirmation.
Submitting Abstracts
You may submit your abstract by typing directly in the online submission abstract text
box or you may use a special upload feature. To take advantage of this feature, use
Internet Explorer 5.5. If the abstract site detects an older version of a web browser, the
site will provide a link that will allow you to download the latest version.
After clicking on the link to the online abstract submission site to begin the process,
you will be able to view help pages that are tailored to the particular screen you are on.
An abstract is ready for submission when, in the "Summary Section," you see
the words "This submission is complete." The abstract is only submitted to
reviewers after the deadline date. You may update or make changes to your abstract as long
as the system allows you to do so. The date listed under your abstract is the date and
time you originally created the abstract. This will not change if the abstract is altered.
At any time a help section with instructions for submitting abstracts can be accessed
by pushing the "Help" icon on each page.
The deadline for receipt of abstracts by ASM is Friday, October 12,
2001.
Abstract Revisions
If a correction is needed, do not resubmit your abstract. Doing so will cause a
duplicate entry in the database. Instead please return to the Abstract Submission web site
and log in as a "Returning User." Once you have selected the abstract you would
like to edit, you have the option of making changes within the text, adding or removing an
author, or deleting the abstract entirely.
You may update or make changes to your abstract until October 17, 2001. No revisions
can be made after this date. Please proofread and spell check your abstract carefully
before submitting it. After any changes are made, make certain that in the "Summary
Section" you see the words "This submission is complete" to ensure that no
required information was deleted in the editing process.
If there is a change in the name or address of the presenting author, use the online
system to change this information by clicking the "Profile" button.
Notification of Acceptance
When you use the online submission form, you will be supplied with a
secure login and password. You will be able to use these to check the disposition of your
abstract. You will receive an e-mail when the disposition letter is posted to your
account. Disposition letters will remain online at the submission site until the
conference begins.
Abstract Withdrawal
To withdraw a submitted abstract after the October 12, 2001 abstract submission
deadline, written notification (e-mail, fax or letter) is required. Requests to withdraw
an abstract after this date should be sent to:
American Society for Microbiology
