Conference Description and Goals
IMMEM serves as an interactive forum for the fields of microbial typing and its various applications in diagnostics, food microbiology, human and veterinary epidemiology, and basic research.
State-of-the-art lectures on microbial typing and molecular epidemiology will be presented by highly qualified speakers, and active participation by attendees will be encouraged. Original contributions on the latest developments will be presented in oral and poster presentations.

The Final Program booklet including the abstracts will be distributed at the meeting in Les Diablerets.
Bionumerics and GelCompar Workshop
This basic workshop will focus on the main features and all the practical aspects of the software package GelCompar II and BioNumerics. The participant will get a good overview of all the possibilities of the programs, through numerous hands-on demo's and exercises.

Congress Registration
All documents including registration packets (congress wallet, personal name badge, final program including abstracts, vouchers etc.) will be handed out to registered participants during the following opening hours:
Wednesday, August 27, 2003 15.00 – 18.30 h

Saturday, August 30, 2003 08.15 – 12.30 h
Cancellation
Refund of registration fees, less 25% administrative charges, can be applied for in writing until August 1, 2003 to the Administrative Secretariat in Basel, Switzerland. After this date no refund will be possible. For any change of names, a fee of CHF 30.- will be charged.
The participant acknowledges that he / she has no right to lodge damage claims against the organizers should the holding of the meeting be hindered or prevented by unexpected political events (such as acts of terrorism, danger of hostility, war etc.) or by unexpected economic events or generally by force majeure, or should the non-appearance of speakers or other reasons necessitate program changes. With registration, the participant accepts this proviso.
Confirmation
Upon receipt of the correct registration fee, each participant will receive a confirmation of registration. Please bring this confirmation to the registration desk as proof of your registration.A limited number of travel grants of $500 each are
available for predoctoral students and new postdocs. To qualify, applicants must:
1) be a member of
ASM or ESCMID;
2) be the presenting author on an accepted abstract; and
3) be
either at the predoctoral level or within one year of earning a doctoral
degree.
Applicants submitting an abstract via the ASM web site must
check the box on the screen when filling out the electronic submission
form. After abstracts have been reviewed, all applicants will be
contacted by ASM to provide the information needed to complete their
travel grant applications. Deadline for Student Travel
Grants is May 30, 2003.
FEMS Young Scientist Grants
The Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) supports the IMMEM 6 with "Young Scientist Grants". To qualify the young scientist must fulfill the following criteria:
1)
be a working microbiologist, 35 years old or younger
2) a member of a FEMS society or recommended by a senior member of a
FEMS society.
For more information on the procedure, go to the FEMS web site. The Young Scientist should then obtain a copy of the regulations and application forms. The completed application form should be submitted to the administrative secretariat of the meeting. The deadline for FEMS submissions is June 13, 2003.
Students can apply to both grants, but should be aware of the fact that only one grant might eventually be awarded. Students will be notified no later than June 20, 2003 upon acceptance.
Hotel rooms in various categories have been reserved for the participants.
Participants can book the hotel online.
Payment Policy
For reservations via Internet full credit card payment is required. After successful reservation you will receive a written confirmation by regular mail.
Cancellation Policy
If your hotel reservation is cancelled before July 15, 2003, the amount will be refunded less CHF 75.- handling fee. If your reservation is cancelled after July 16, 2003 or if you arrive later or leave earlier than on the dates indicated on your reservation form, the total accommodation amount will be charged and no refunds can be made.
Changes
Any change of reservation will be subject to a handling fee of CHF 30.-. Changes or cancellations have to be made in writing to AKM Travel AG, Basel and can not be made via internet. Please do not contact the hotel directly.

Please note that the opening lectures will start on Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at 5:00 pm, and that the final conclusions will end on Saturday, August 30, at 12:30 am.

Join us for the official Gala Dinner at the beautiful "Tournant Kuklos" in Leysin. After a scenic bus ride, the cable-car will bring us to the summit of "La Berneuse". Enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery accompanied by typical Swiss Food and local folklore in a relaxed atmosphere.

Excursion
to "Les Mazots"
After a day filled with scientific sessions we suggest to meet on a casual outing to the mountain restaurant "Les Mazots" on the "Col de la Croix". A 15-minute bus ride will take you up to the mountains to 1'700 meters (5'600 feet). Wine, coffee, tea and snacks will be served on the terrace offering beautiful views over the surrounding meadows and to the nearby mountains.

After the excursion to "Les Mazots" we suggest one of the following dinner options:

Stay at the "Les Mazots" for dinner and return to Les
Diablerets by bus (free of charge)
