Conference Description and Goals
The
conference will provide a forum for the exchange of scientific
information in the emerging research area of biological materials,
especially whole cells, used for the realization of molecular-scale
machines. This conference will provide a unique opportunity for
microbiologists, physicists, engineers, and others working at this
interface of many disciplines to interact, network, and form
interdisciplinary alliances.

Scientific Topics
to be Covered
Scientific Program
- Bio-microelectronics,
bio-nanoelectronics, and bio-photonics
Potential research areas covered are magnetic bacteria,
bacterial rhodopsin, S-layer and other microbial systems explored
for use in making electronic or photonic devices.
- Nanobiotechnology
This topic is in the area of nano-structured materials that
interface with biological materials (e.g. whole cells) in
applications such as diseases detection, monitoring, and control.
- Bio-MEMS,
biosensors, and bio-robotics
This topic area covers the use of biological materials (whole
cells, biomolecules, functional biomolecular machines, etc) in
information processing, sensing, and actuating systems.
Examples include bacterial flagella, ATP motors, and the use of
genetic circuits for information processing.

Student Travel
Grants
A limited number of travel grants of $500 each are
available for predoctoral students and new postdocs (within one year of
earning doctoral degree). To qualify, applicants must: 1) be a member of
ASM or IEEE-EMBS; 2) be the presenting author on an accepted abstract; and 3) be
either at the predoctoral level or within one year of earning a doctoral
degree. Applicants submitting an abstract via the ASM web site must
check the box on the screen when filling out the electronic submission
form. After abstracts have been reviewed, all applicants will be
contacted by ASM to provide the information needed to complete their
travel grant applications.

ASM: To register online, please fill in a non-member registration
form and at the end of the process select "Alternate Payment
Method." Print the form. In the payment amount section, note the $100
discount (available to IEEE-EMBS and ASM members), and fax or mail your form
with payment to ASM Conferences.
Location
Conference participants will stay at the Plaza Hotel in New York
City. Located in the heart of New York, bordered on the east by
Fifth Avenue and on the north by Central park, the Plaza is one of New
York's most celebrated hotels.
To reserve a room at the Plaza Hotel, contact the hotel directly by phone at
212-759-3000, or call toll free at 1-800-759-3000. ASM has negotiated a special room rate for conference attendees
of $199 per night for single or double occupancy. Be sure to request the preferred
rate for the ASM Conference on Bio-, Micro-, and Nanosystems. Please be prepared to
leave a deposit in order to secure your space. The deadline for making reservations at
the preferred rate is June 7, 2003, after which time reservations will be taken on a
space-available basis.
