    Family and Guest Program Information

    The American Society for Microbiology would like to welcome you to Washington, DC, the host city for ASM's 103rd General Meeting! The Family and Guest Hospitality Program will offer exciting family activities and complimentary educational programs that are both fun and educational.

    The program will begin with a "Welcome to the Nation’s Capitol" program on Sunday, May 18 at 3:00 p.m. in the Washington Convention Center. This program will offer an overview of activities and events held during the General Meeting, including the complimentary education sessions, convention camp and child care, the General Meeting tour program, and much more. In addition, the Washington, DC Convention and Tourism Corporation will be present to welcome ASM participants to the city and provide an overview of some of the top sites to visit. Refreshments will be served.

    Family and Guest Hospitality Registration Fee

    Designed for family members and guests of registered scientists, the guest program is available for a $50 registration fee. In addition to admittance into the Guest Lounge, registration provides:

    • Entrance to the Exhibit Hall during all Exhibit Hall hours
    • Unlimited access to ASM Courtesy Shuttle
    • Admittance to the complimentary guest programs on a space-available basis
    • Ability to register at an additional fee for discounted tours of Washington, DC
    • Admittance to the Opening Session and Reception and the President’s Forum and Reception.

    Please note: Non-scientist guests are not permitted entry to scientific sessions and are not eligible to receive Continuing Education credit of any kind.

    Guest Lounge

    The guest lounge, located in Room 153 of the Washington Convention Center, is a place for our guests to relax and enjoy our complimentary beverages, meet and make new friends. The Guest Lounge will be open to registered guests Monday, May 19, 2003 - Wednesday, May 21, 2003.

    Fun Run

    Join us on May 18, 2003, at 7:30 a.m. and run or walk the scenic race course. The fun run is open to all ASM participants. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the Literary Friends of the D.C. Public Library. Awards will be given to the top three male and female finishers. See the 5K Race page in this program for more information.

    Complimentary Programs

    Each program is limited to 30 participants.

    The Visual Photographic Eye on DC

     
    Monday, May 19, 2003
    9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
     
    John Drew, Professional DC Photographer for over 20 years, will present an hour of overview and instruction on creative technique and composition. Emphasis will be placed on photographing monuments and architecture.

    After the instruction session, you will travel to the Lincoln Memorial with the instructor to have hands on practice at taking unique and creative photographs of the Lincoln Memorial, The Vietnam Memorial, as well as the breathtaking view of the Mall with the reflecting pools, the Washington Monument, and the United States Capitol Building as the backdrop.

    At the end of the class you will receive certificates for completing the Creative Eye Photography Course. Disposable Cameras will be collected and sent for rush processing. You will receive a copy of the photos by 12:00 noon, Tuesday, May 20 for keepsakes.

    Cooking Demonstration at L'Academie De Cuisine

    Be the producer of your own “cooking show” in this three-hour cooking demonstration with one of L’Academie de Cuisine’s chef/instructors. You will watch as the chef prepares a specialty White House style menu step-by-step. You will dine on the chef’s creations, complimented by house wines.

    Afternoon of Body and Mind Relaxation

    The Sports Club/LA in Washington DC would like to take your frustrations and worries away in one afternoon. Attending a Yinyang class brings the best of two worlds together in one class. The class begins with cardio kickboxing and transitions into core strength and total body conditioning. The class explores the hard and soft sides of movement and balances chi (energy!) This class is instructed by one of the top rated instructors in the country. After a tough work out the Spa Bar will serve Zen Tea, Sake or Wine.
