The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), headquartered in Washington, DC, is seeking a Controller in the Finance Department.  ASM is part of one of science’s most exciting fields. ASM is looking for a bright, enthusiastic, energetic individual who is looking for a great opportunity. The incumbent will be responsible for the accounting operations of ASM, an organization with an annual budget of approximately $50-60 million. This position will oversee audit/tax functions and coordinate activities for the outside audit firm to prepare and issue audited financial statements in accordance with GAAP. This position also requires proficiency in all aspects of accrual based accounting in pertinent GAAP rules and regulations, overall compliance with Uniform Guidance requirements and the annual Uniform Guidance audit.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting and CPA license is required. 
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in supervisory and accounting management. 
  • Non-profit organization experience a plus but not required. 
  • Ability to communicate and present results to non-financial staff throughout the organization. 
  • Experience working with a 501(c)(3) organization a strong plus. 
  • Must be knowledgeable in accounting and reporting requirements set forth in the Uniform Guidance.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel, excellent writing, communication and interpersonal skills are required. 
  • A strong attention to detail and willingness to support the Finance team in delivering high quality reporting. 
  • High level of integrity with a professional attitude in all dealings. 
  • Experience with Intacct and NetForum a plus but not required.
