ASM Research Capstone Fellowship Program

 

Enhance Your Research Presentation Skills

Have you conducted research and need funding to present your research? Apply for the 2017 Undergraduate Research Capstone Fellowship! 

Through the Undergraduate Research Capstone Fellowship program, you will receive up to $1,500 to attend the 2017 Microbe Academy for Professional Development (MAPD) where you will receive personalized feedback on your research presentation and career advice. You will showcase your newly acquired skills when you present your research at ASM Microbe 2017 (pending acceptance of your abstract).

WHAT IS THE MICROBE ACADEMY FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT?

The 2017 Microbe Academy for Professional Development (MAPD) will be held prior to ASM Microbe on May 31-June 1, 2017.

At MAPD, you will:

  • learn how to successfully transition to professional society meetings
  • develop skills to make a successful presentation
  • meet and network with peers who share similar interest in microbiology
  • build on networking opportunities with faculty mentors
  • strengthen mentoring relationships with research and academic advisors

Faculty facilitators will provide you with personalized feedback and coaching in one-on-one and group settings and discuss mentoring and career tips to ensure success in microbial sciences careers.

 

HOW DO I APPLY?

Complete the application by January 20.

*Please note you must also submit a research abstract for presentation at ASM Microbe 2017 by January 9.

 

AM I ELIGIBLE?

You must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be an ASM member,
  • Be U.S. citizen or Permanent U.S. resident, 
  • Be enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate student during the 2016-2017 academic years or in a post-baccalaureate program (freshmen with college level research experience, sophomores, juniors, or seniors who will not graduate before December 2016)
  • Be from an underrepresented minority group (groups include African-Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and Pacific Islanders), a community college, a minority serving institution, a first generation college student or non-traditional student, 
  • Have conducted research in the microbial sciences at a U.S institution (host mentor is not required to be an ASM member, but recommended),
  • Have a strong interest in obtaining a research career and post-graduate training in research within the microbial sciences, and
  • Be accepted to present a poster or oral presentation at ASM Microbe
Preference will be given to juniors and seniors. Applicants can include: community college, postbacccalaureate, and undergraduate students. Students cannot be a previous recipient of a UR-Capstone award.

Your applications should demonstrate: 

  • Academic achievement
  • Achievement with previous research experiences or independent projects
  • Commitment to research
  • Career goals as a research scientist
  • Personal motivation to participate in the program
  • Leadership skills
  • Involvement in activities that serve the needs of underrepresented groups
