John D. Coates is a Professor of Microbiology at University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a Senior Scientist appointment at Lawrence Berkeley National Labs and is Director of the UC Berkeley Soured Systems Biology Program. He received a BSc from Dublin City University, Ireland and a PhD in Microbiology from National University of Ireland, Galway. His research seeks to balance society's need to provide ecological protection while maintaining stable economic growth. His interests include diverse forms of microbial metabolism and their novel application. Other interests include early Earth and evolution, alternative energies, and bioremediation of toxic compounds. He incorporates a broad spectrum of traditional and next generation technologies in his laboratory with an emphasis on interdisciplinary research. He has won several awards for research and mentorship and is involved in outreach programs supporting high school and community college students across the US and Europe.
