My major research focus has been the glycoimmunobiology of the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease (ChD). More specifically, I have been studying structural and functional aspects of glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored glycoconjugates (i.e., glycoproteins and glycolipids), which are major and highly immunogenic parasite molecules. In parallel, I have also been engaged in translational research by developing biomarkers for the diagnosis of the disease and cure assessment following chemotherapy, and glycan- and peptide-based vaccines for ChD. Throughout my career, I have also been actively involved in the structural and functional analysis of a variety of biomolecules from other protozoan parasites (e.g., Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania spp.), fungi (e.g., Cryptococcus neoformans, Histoplasma capsulatum, Candida albicans, and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis), and arthropod vectors (e.g, triatomines and ticks).
