Axel A. Brakhage, Ph.D. is Professor at the Institute of Microbiology at University of Jena, Germany and Director of the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, Jena, Germany. He earned his Ph.D. at University of Muenster, Germany, and was a postdoctoral fellow at The University of Sheffield, UK. His research focuses on the infection biology of the human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus and on the molecular biology / biotechnology of fungal secondary metabolites and their function in microbial communication. His group carried out pioneering work on the activation of fungal silent gene clusters by genetic engineering and by microbial communication via modification of the histone modification machinery. Furthermore his group discovered the first immune evasion mechanisms of A. fumigatus.
