After graduating from Munich University Medical School and doing a postdoc with Eckard Wimmer in poliovirus, I focussed my research on HIV protease, its role in viral maturation and its potential as a drug target. This led me into the field of HIV assembly, where we developed in vitro assembly and tissue culture based systems and teamed up with structural biologists to determine the ultrastructure of the immature and mature virion and its conversion. In parallel, we worked together with chemists to develop inhibitors of protease, assembly and maturation. More recently, we have extended this work to study the role of the incoming capsid and its interacting host factors in viral replication, intracellular trafficking and evasion from innate immune recognition.
