Lewis Richard 250

Richard Lewis holds Bachelors and Doctoral degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford and is Professor of Structural Biology at Newcastle University, UK. He established and heads the Newcastle Structural Biology Laboratory. Lewis has spent his entire research career using structural biology to gain molecular insights to biological problems in microbiology. As an early career researcher Lewis determined the molecular basis for activation by phosphorylation in Spo0A, the master regulator of sporulation in Bacillus subtilis. He continued his focus on signal transduction and how Bacilli integrate various different environmental stresses through a multi-component signalling hub, the stressosome. The Lewis lab currently seeks to understand how the bacterial cell wall is synthesised and how its synthesis is linked to cell division.
