Bill Mohn is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the Life Sciences Institute at the University of British Columbia. Bill investigates bacterial catabolism of organic compounds, including steroids and lignocellulose. He is interested in elucidating catabolic pathways as well as the responsible organisms within the context of complex microbial communities. Bill also investigates the structure and function of microbial communities in diverse environments. Recent work focuses on how human perturbations influence forest soil communities and key nutrient cycles mediated by community members as well as on how interactions between the gut microbiome and developing immune system can lead to health or disease states, such as asthma. This research is relevant to the manufacture of bioproducts, environmental stewardship and human health.
