My laboratory studies the mechanisms involved in the development of humoral and T-cell immune responses capable of inhibiting malaria sporozoite infection and the development of liver stages. We defined the parasite epitopes recognized by antibodies that neutralize sporozoite infectivity and established that CD8+ T cells are a major protective immune mechanism against liver stages of malaria parasites. We developed new methodological approaches based on the generation of T cell receptor transgenic m mice to study basic cellular and molecular features of CD8+ T cells specific for malaria parasites. We also developed transgenic rodent P berghei parasites expressing P falciparum antigens, to establish in vivo models that will allow the preclinical evaluation of new immunizations procedures, new vaccine constructs and different adjuvants for the induction of protective immunity against malaria.
