Dr. Lianhui Zhang is a Professor of Microbiology and Plant Pathology at the South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou, China. Dr. Zhang is one of the cofounders of quorum sensing in microbiology. He and his supervisors reported the second acylhomoserine lactone (AHL) bacterial cell-cell communication signal, and proposed that AHL represents a widely conserved signal family modulating various biological functions. He and his team subsequently identified and characterized a range of quorum sensing signals, including DSF and IQS, the former has now become another widely conserved quorum sensing signal family. In addition, they identified a novel and potent AHL lactonase for degradation of AHL signals, and provided the first demonstration that quorum sensing can be disrupted (quorum quenching) in a practical way to control plant bacterial diseases. The work has immense implications not only for the field of plant pathology but also in control of human and animal diseases.
