Late-breaking Poster Abstract Submissions

The ASMCUE Program Committee now invites late-breaking abstract submissions for a poster session that focuses on education research outcomes associated with any of the subdisciplines in the biological sciences. Authors who complete data collection and analysis in April or May 2018 are strongly encouraged to submit an abstract. Please review guidelines below. Authors should take into account the recommended criteria below and review the Poster Abstract Review Rubric prior to submitting.

Please note: Late-breaking abstracts will either be accepted or rejected. No modifications will be permitted. Dispositions will be sent out prior to the final registration deadline – June 21, 2018.

Abstract Format and Guidelines

The abstract should describe innovative teaching approaches or the specific activities conducted by the students and must indicate how those changes affected student learning.  Work described in the abstract must have been tested on students and assessment of the activity’s outcomes should be described. Analyzed data and conclusions should be included.

Abstracts must be based on results that have not been published in any journal or presented at any public, scientific, or educational conference, nationally or internationally, before July 26, 2018. Exception: ASMCUE is an affiliated meeting of the ASM Microbe 2018. As such, abstracts submitted to ASM Microbe may also be submitted to ASMCUE.  Authors should keep in mind that the submission and review processes for each meeting are executed independently of one another.

Examples of previously accepted abstracts may be found in the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education’s 2017 Spotlight Issue.

Make sure to consider the following when completing your abstract:

  • Description of Activities/Approaches Introduced:  Are the goals and particular education situation presented in sufficient detail to understand the author’s choice of activity/teaching strategy?  Is there specific information described for the student activities or teaching strategy to allow other conference participants to determine how to adopt these activities?
  • Hypothesis Statement:  Is the authors’ hypothesis clearly stated?  Does the author define how the activity/approach is expected to impact student learning?
  • Assessment:  What were the outcomes? How was the effectiveness of this project determined?  What methods were used to assess the impact of the activity/strategy on student learning?  What data was collected?
  • Learning Impact and Conclusions:  How did this activity impact or enhance student learning?  Does the research study potentially add to or deepen the understanding of issues associated with teaching and learning?  Research that leads the field in new directions is often more worthwhile than replications of existing research studies.
  • Length: Is the length under 1850 characters (excluding spaces)?

In order to streamline the submission process and prevent entry errors, we strongly encourage all individuals to use these guidelines to prepare their responses in Word prior to uploading their formal submissions to the online conference site.  Please refer to the Abstract Submission Form, which details the information that will be required for your submission. Review Criteria

All submissions undergo a peer-review process by the ASMCUE Program Planning Committee. Late-breaking abstracts will either be accepted or rejected. No modifications will be permitted. Dispositions will be sent out prior to the final registration deadline – June 21, 2018. Abstract rejection criteria are similar to any scientific meeting (no hypothesis; inadequate experimental methods; insufficient data presented; no conclusions).

Recognition

Abstracts accepted for ASMCUE poster presentations will be formatted and published in the Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education (JMBE) which highlights science education research and ready-to-use education activities and tools to the ASM community.
