Call for ASM Distinguished Lecturer Nominations

The ASM Distinguished Lecturer program is supported by the American Society for Microbiology and a Waksman Foundation for Microbiology endowment.

Call for Nominations:  ASM Distinguished Lecturers, including "Waksman Foundation Lecturers"

Application Deadline: November 15, 2018

The American Society for Microbiology Distinguished Lecturer (ASMDL) Program annually selects a scientifically diverse group of distinguished lecturers to deliver lectures at ASM Branch meetings throughout the country. Lecturers are chosen through a competitive nomination process, and only the most distinguished lecturers and researchers are chosen to participate in the program.

Waksman Foundation Lecturers:  The ASMDL program was originally sponsored by the Waksman Foundation for Microbiology, and for many years was solely funded by the Foundation. In honor of the Waksman Foundation's commitment to the program, ASM and the Waksman Foundation for Microbiology have partnered to support up to three Waksman Foundation Lecturers per year who will serve as part of the ASM Distinguished Lecturers Roster.  Waksman Foundation Lecturers will be selected from the ASMDL nominations. Distinguished Lecturer candidates with expertise in antibiotics, translational research or environmental microbiology will be considered for the additional title of Waksman Foundation Lecturer.

An important component of the ASMDL program, including the Waksman Foundation Lecturers, is its emphasis on providing opportunities for students to interact with prominent lecturers who represent a wide range of scientific interest areas. At Branch meetings, Lecturers interact directly with students in a variety of ways, including participating in informal discussions and round tables and attending and judging posters and/or oral presentations.

The ASMDL Committee will begin preparing the speaker list for the 2019-2020 program year in November 2018.

The Committee welcomes nominations from the ASM Membership.

Lecturer Duties and Travel Reimbursement:

  • Lecturers speak at ASM Branch meetings and events (at invitation of individual Branches)
  • Lecturers serve 2-year terms (July 1, 2019 – June 30, 2021)

  • The ASMDL program does NOT provide honoraria for Lecturers
  • Lecturers can give as many (or as few) lectures as their schedule allows during their term; there are no maximum or minimum number of lectures required
