Institutional Sales Manager (FULL-TIME POSITION)

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) is looking for a full-time Institutional Sales Manager for Journals, to be based in Washington, DC, at the Society’s headquarters location.  The American Society for Microbiology is the largest single life science society, composed of over 50,000 scientists and health professionals. ASM's mission is to promote and advance the microbial sciences. The Institutional Sales Manager will be part of a team in ASM’s Journals Department.  The mission of the Journals program is to advance the microbiological sciences through the pursuit of scientific knowledge and dissemination of the results of fundamental and applied research.  ASM journal subscribers include libraries at colleges and universities, hospitals and microbiology labs, government agencies, and pharmaceutical companies throughout the world.  Responsibilities of the manager include, but are not limited to, planning and executing global sales strategies for ASM Journals in the institutional market.  Incumbent will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing a sales strategy for ASM  in order to grow the institutional subscriber base and retain existing subscribers.  Working with the Journals Director and an international team of sales agents, the Institutional Sales Manager will develop and execute global sales goals, help formulate marketing strategy, and ensure excellent customer service.

Qualifications:

  • BA, BS, or equivalent
  • Five years’ experience in the library services industry, including sales of online subscription products
  • Three or more years’ supervisory experience
  • Prior experience working with contracted external sales force
  • Advanced user of Microsoft Office suite, with strong Excel skills
  • Knowledge of library concerns and institutional sales best practices and ability to apply this knowledge to provide insights as well as recommendations for changes
  • Prior experience developing and monitoring budgets  
  • Highly organized and detail oriented, excellent analytical skills
  • Able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to interact effectively with all levels of users and technical resources
  • Able to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team
  • Uses sound judgment to identify issues and escalates when appropriate
  • Able to manage multiple concurrent tasks, switch priorities and focus as needed
  • Some travel required
  • Strong project management skills, able to organize and prioritize complex projects effectively
  • Strong understanding of and previous experience in Scientific, Technical, and Medical (STM) publishing
  • Able to evaluate vendor proposals and negotiate complex contracts and licenses in a timely manner
