International Ambassadors

Country Ambassadors are established leaders who work with ASM to foster collaboration and engagement at a national level. Young Ambassadors of Science are specifically charged with engaging students and early careers scientists worldwide.

 

Country Ambassadors

Country Ambassadors are senior scientists that represent ASM in their home country, facilitating partnership and exchange with other scientists worldwide. There are currently 89 ASM Country Ambassadors.

Responsibilities of Country Ambassadors:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with local institutions and organizations
  • Identify and assist ASM in responding to the needs of the local scientific community
  • Strengthen ASM’s global network of members

Ambassadors are elected to an initial 3-year term with an opportunity to be considered for one additional term

Benefits of being a Country Ambassador:

  • Opportunity to play a leadership role in ASM’s mission to advance microbiology worldwide
  • Prestige of being an official ASM representative to microbiologists in your country
  • Opportunity to network with other scientific leaders worldwide

Eligibility Requirements:

    • Have current ASM membership
    • Completed a PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a microbiology-related field OR a graduate degree and 10 years post-academic experience
    • Published at least three microbiology-related paper in last 5 years
    • English (intermediate - advanced) proficiency
    • Able to commit 8 hours per month to Ambassador activities

Application Process for Country Ambassadors:

    • Applications should be submitted to ASM International Affairs via the International Online Applications website
    • Applications must include:
      • Curriculum Vitae
      • Years of ASM membership
      • Description of previous ASM activities
      • ASM and non-ASM meetings regularly attended
      • Membership in national, regional, and international scientific societies
      • Description of leadership in local scientific community
      • Area of scientific interest
      • List of agencies/ministries, organizations, universities, etc., where applicant has strong contacts
      • Letter of Intent explaining interest in position, relevant skills and experience
      • Action plan with their proposed activities in the Country Ambassador role
      • Nomination letter from an ASM member
      • Two additional references

Young Ambassadors of Science

ASM Young Ambassadors of Science are dynamic young leaders, who represent ASM in their home country, facilitating networking, professional development, and collaboration to strengthen science globally. ASM Young Ambassadors mobilize the next generation of scientists to develop innovative approaches to meet the Grand Challenges in Science. There are currently 61 Young Ambassadors of Science.

Responsibilities of Young Ambassadors:

  • Promote collaboration between ASM and international universities and societies
  • Identify and assist ASM in responding to the needs of the local microbiology community
  • Expand ASM's international network, focusing on the next generation of scientists: students and early-career scientists

Benefits of Young Ambassadors:

    • Prestige of being an official ASM representative
    • Opportunity to network with scientific leaders worldwide
    • Contribution to advancing microbiology to meet Grand Challenges

Eligibility of Young Ambassadors:

    • Have current ASM membership
    • Are in the process of obtaining or have obtained an advanced academic degree, within the past five years and are working in any of the microbiology disciplines
    • Have excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Experience using social media
    • Have demonstrated leadership in their scientific or academic community

Application Process for Young Ambassadors:

    • Applications should be submitted to ASM International Affairs via the International Online Applications website
    • Applications must include: curriculum vitae; ASM Member Number; ASM and non-ASM meetings regularly attended; area of scientific interest; membership in national, regional, and international scientific societies; a cover letter explaining the member's interest in becoming a Young Ambassador and highlighting relevant skills, education, or experience; and an action plan with their proposed activities in the Young Ambassador Role
    • Young Ambassadors are elected for an initial 1-year followed by a formal review and opportunity to extend their term for an additional 2 years
