Obituary: Mark Wainberg, AIDS Drug Pioneer

Dr. Mark Wainberg, head of AIDS research at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research at the Jewish General Hospital, Director of the McGill University AIDS Centre, and Professor of Medicine and of Microbiology and Immunology, died April 11 while on vacation in Florida. Dr. Wainberg identified 3TC as an agent efecive against HIV in 1989; 3TC (Lamivudine) has been a key component of the drug combinations used to treat HIV infection. Dr. Wainberg made many other contributions to treatment of HIV/AIDS and was vocal in his promotion of global efforts to fight the disease.
