Career Development Grant Postdoctoral Women

Career Development Grants for Postdoctoral Women (CDGPW) are given to support the career development of the candidate by providing funds to travel to a meeting, visit another laboratory, take a course in a geographically distant place, or for other travel to advance the candidate's career. The grants will be awarded to enhance the careers of postdoctoral women with outstanding scientific accomplishments and potential for significant research in the area of microbiology. The fields covered by the award are any of those represented by Divisions of the American Society for Microbiology.

Currently, up to four $1,500 cash awards are given annually.  The cash award must be used within a year of its award.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Be a woman scientist
  • Hold a doctoral degree
  • Have no more than five years of cumulative postdoctoral experience
  • Perform postdoctoral work in microbiology at an institution in the United States
  • Be an ASM member

Nomination Procedures:
Deadline: All submissions must be dated no later than January 15th. The Selection Committee will announce the winners by mid April.

Nominations: Candidates for the award must be nominated. Nominations for the grant require the following:

  1. Candidate must complete a Candidate Statement which describes her academic accomplishments, career goals and how the grant will be used.  Candidates should include an explanation of how they think the planned use of the award (meeting, course, lab visit, etc.) will help their careers.  The length of the statement may not exceed 3 pages, single-spaced.
  2. The candidate’s CV may be any length and must be submitted with the Candidate Statement.
  3. A letter of support must be provided by a nominator, who should be the candidate’s research project director, Department Chair, or Center Director.  The nominator must be a member of ASM and may only support one candidate for this award per year.  Nominators should include a statement in their nomination letters on how the planned use of the award (meeting, course, lab visit, etc.) will benefit the candidate's career objectives.
  4. A second Letter of Support from a scientist familiar with the candidate and her work must be submitted, for example from your Ph.D. advisor or major collaborator. The scientist drafting the Letter of Support does not have to be a member of ASM.
  5. Any candidate who wishes to use the award money to visit another scientist's laboratory must submit a letter from the laboratory indicating that the proposed visit is permissible.
  6. Any candidate who wishes to use the award money to attend a meeting or course must provide a detailed description of the conference/course, or a link to online information about the conference/course, or scanned material such as a flyer or course description that includes date/location, and other pertinent details.
  7. Candidate must complete and submit an “Application Cover Form.”

Submit all materials above no later than January 15th by email to Shilpa Gadwal

The selection committee will announce awardees by the end of April. The awardees are highly encouraged to attend ASM Microbe to receive their plaques and/or identify a representative to attend Microbe on their behalf.

Additional Nomination Information

  • Candidates may be re-nominated as long as the nominee continues to meet eligibility criteria; however, women who have previously won the award are not eligible for a second award. No person shall be a nominator for more than one candidate in any given year. Once submitted, nomination materials become the property of the Selection Committee and will not be returned. Winners will be decided by a Selection Committee appointed by the Membership Board Chair. CDGPW are administered by the ASM Membership Services Department.
  • In general, requests for funds to attend the ASM Microbe are not viewed favorably if the advisor has grants that would normally support attendance by people in his/her laboratory. Also, the career development activity should not be one for which the applicant's advisor is already funded.

Sample Statements

Sample of Statements by Previous Awardees

– I am requesting funds to travel to a laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, France. Laboratory time will be used to learn techniques involved in examining the interaction of fungal cells with the blood-brain barrier.  These techniques will assist me in determining whether morphological changes inhibit a cell penetration of the blood-brain barrier and will allow me to clarify my future scientific focus.

– I am requesting registration and travel expenses to attend the Cold Spring Harbor meeting on Microbial Pathogenesis and Host Response. The organizers of this biennial meeting have arranged a particularly impressive panel of speakers and session chairs to lead discussions on topics relevant to my current interests. In addition to the talks and seminars, I am looking forward to presenting my current work and discussing my research projects with other meeting attendees.

– I am requesting the fellowship to defray costs associated with attendance at a summer course on Microbial Oceanography at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. This course is essential to my postdoctoral work and professional development. It will expose me to a wide array of techniques and ways of thinking that are fundamental to conducting research in my field. In addition, attending this course would enable me to more rapidly build a network of colleagues, thus helping me establish myself in this field.
