May 16, 2008 - ASM Sends Letter to Senator Harkin Supporting NIH and NSF Funding

The Honorable Tom Harkin
Chair, Subcommittee on Labor,
Health and Human Services and Education
United States Senate
731 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510-1502

Dear Senator Harkin:

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM), the largest single life science organization with over 42,000 members, deeply appreciates and supports your efforts to include $400 million in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the Fiscal Year 2008 supplemental appropriations bill. This additional funding for biomedical research is key to finding new cures, treatments and preventions for infectious and chronic diseases that threaten our future. This increased funding is badly needed because the NIH budget has been flat or declining since FY 2003. This increased investment in NIH funding will help ensure US competitiveness in medical breakthroughs and cutting edge technologies.

Thank you for your continuing support for biomedical research which is so vital to public health and economic well being.
