Dr. Deng is a Professor of Microbiology and the head of both the School of Life Sciences and Biotechnology and the Chinese Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism at Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is a Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Science Academy for the Developing World (formally the Third World Academy of Sciences, TWAS). Dr. Deng's major interest is in Streptomyces genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology of antibiotic biosynthesis, and DNA backbone modification by sulfur (phosphorothiolation).
