Dr. Perlman's laboratory has been interested in how viruses, in particular murine coronaviruses, cause immunopathologic disease. Much of this disease occurs during the process of virus clearance, and involves both the innate and adaptive immune responses. His efforts have focused on the basis of demyelination in mice infected with a murine coronavirus and on the pathogenesis of the human disease, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
