Dr. Liu's work lies in the interdisciplinary area of chemical biology. His lab has elucidated the molecular mechanism of action of number of bioactive natural products of microbial origin. He and others discovered the type 2 methionine aminopeptidase as the target of the anti-angiogenic natural products fumagillin and ovalicin. His group also discovered that antitumor natural product lactimidomycin binds to the larger subunit of ribosome, blocking the elongation step of eukaryotic translation similar to cycloheximide. His lab has also identified, through high-throughput screening, a number of inhibitors of the methionine aminopeptidase family of enzymes that showed promising antimalarial and anti-mycobacterial activities.
