Jens Nielsen’s research is in the field of industrial biotechnology and systems biology of industrial microorganisms. In his research he is performed detailed characterization of the metabolism of yeast and filamentous fungi using genome-scale metabolic models and metabolic flux studies. Through integrating these methods with high-throughput data like transcriptome, proteome and metabolome data new insight into the regulation of metabolism is obtained and this is used for metabolic engineering of the cells for improved production of fuels, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Currently the group is working on developing yeast cell factories for production of biodiesel and chemicals that can be used for production of bio-materials.
