Using reassortant rotaviruses, Dr. Paul Offit's laboratory determined the genetics of rotavirus neutralization phenotype and the genetics or rotavirus virulence. In addition, using vaccinia-rotavirus recombinants, they determined the immunodominant protein that elicited rotavirus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes. This information was used to construct bovine (strain WC3) human reassortant rotaviruses that eventually became the rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq.
