Dr. Christa Schleper's laboratory is interested in the molecular biology and evolution of archaea, as well as in the development of novel metagenomic and metatranscriptomic approaches to study uncultivated microorganisms. Their main focus lies in the study of ammonia oxidizing archaea from soils and other environments,  by investigating their genomes and their metabolism, but also their ecological distribution and their role in nitrification in natural environments. A second focus lies in the study of stress reactions, virus host interactions and the CRISPR defense system of hyperthermophilic archaea.
