LECTURE TOPICS AND DESCRIPTIONS
Through his experiences in redesigning several courses to include active learning approaches, Dr. Hughes will provide practical advice and specific examples of engaging activities to assist faculty who are interested in trying new approaches to improve student learning.
Dr. Hughes has taught both fully-online and blended (hybrid) courses and has also conducted research on student learning using these modes of instruction in biology courses. In this talk, he will discuss how to develop learning objects for online courses or supplements as well as how to publish these objects in the ASM’s MicrobeLibrary.
Early Research Experiences for Undergraduates
As co-director for UNT’s implementation of the National Genomics Research Initiative (sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education Alliance), Dr. Hughes will provide details on how this research course for beginning freshmen has been implemented and institutionalized at a large research university.
Classroom-based Research Experiences
Dr. Hughes has helped develop and teach advanced undergraduate laboratory courses integrated with faculty research interests. He can provide examples of research-based courses developed at his institution and outcomes from these experiences.
Teaching with the ASM Curriculum Guidelines
In 2011, ASM released curriculum guidelines for undergraduate microbiology. Dr. Hughes has adapted his microbiology course for majors to utilize these guidelines along with active learning approaches. He will discuss his experiences using the curriculum guidelines to develop his course.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH – Lee E. Hughes
Lee Hughes is Assistant Professor of Biology at the University of North Texas (UNT). He has a Bachelor’s degree in English, a Master’s degree in biology, and a Doctorate in microbiology, all from UNT. In 2006, he participated in the ASM’s Scholar-in-Residence program during which he conducted research looking at the effect of online learning objects based on student learning styles. In 2011, he completed the National Academies Summer Institutes on Undergraduate Education in Biology. His current education research focuses on the effectiveness of hybrid and online course formats on student learning and retention. Hughes, Program Director for UNT’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education grant which focuses on research experiences for university and community college students, is examining early research experiences of biology majors in his research laboratory. He co-directs the NSF-funded Fostering Outstanding Cohorts in Undergraduate Science (FOCUS) Scholarships program at UNT as well as UNT’s participation in the HHMI Science Education Alliance (SEA) and Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (PHAGES) program. In the PHAGES program, Dr. Hughes leads freshman students through an authentic research experience in phage biology.
