ASM's Spending Review

Written by
Published in Press Releases

Over the past several months, the ASM leadership has been conducting a strategic spending review, driven by the necessity to achieve a 2018 breakeven budget, after several years of substantial deficits, which cannot be sustained. As part of this effort, starting in 2018, ASM will be formally discontinuing the ASM small conferences program. We have seen abstract submissions, attendance, and conference proposals trending down significantly across our portfolio, and consequently the program has been operating at a consistent loss.

ASM is committed to being the forum for the microbial sciences. Under the guidance of the Council of Microbial Sciences, ASM’s body that provides strategic scientific direction, we will still host one to two small conferences that focus on important research areas that address the needs of the scientific community and have the potential to be financially sustainable. ASM will also continue to organize ASM Microbe, Biothreats, Clinical Virology Symposium, ASMCUE and ABRCMS meetings.

The Board of Directors will look at other ASM programs as well, and decisions regarding changes to those programs will be announced in the month of July.

Thank you for your engagement and loyalty to ASM; if you have any questions, you can send an email to
