According to the March of Dimes, "nearly 50 Members of Congress from both the House and the Senate sent a bipartisan letter to the President asking that funding be distributed in a timely manner to fight Zika and accelerate research on a vaccine."   

Agriculture Secretary Confirmation Vote Slated for April 24
The U.S. Senate has scheduled a vote on the confirmation of Sonny Perdue to be U.S. Secretary of Agriculture on April 24. If confirmed, Perdue will head the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the agency that oversees the Animal Welfare Act and regulates the animal research community

ASM Congressional Exhibit on Agricultural Research
On April 5, Chuck Rice, Chair of the ASM Committee on Environmental Microbiology, represented ASM at the 2017 Agricultural Research Congressional Exhibit and Reception at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center. The event, hosted by; the AFRI Coalition, Supporters of Agricultural Research Foundation (SoAR), National Coalition for Food and Agriculture Research (NC-FAR), and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU); profiled Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded research projects and was attended by members of Congress and staff. The ASM signed onto a coalition letter urging completion the FY 2017 appropriations process with robust investments in scientific research.
