001–WS: Advice from the Experts on Submitting Successful Grant Proposals

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Trainees and early career faculty will benefit from practical advice from established principal investigators and study section members about the grant writing and review process. Successful grant applications are written with the review process and reviewers in mind, but early-stage investigators do not ordinarily have access to this important information. This session will also provide information for grant writers on recent developments, changes and additions to proposal requirements. Read more.

002–WS: Analyzing Your Data in PATRIC: Assembly, Annotation, SNPs, RNA-Seq with a Suite of Tools

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The PATRIC bioinformatics resource center provides a unique experience, where researchers can see their private data “virtually integrated” with the public genomic data available for bacteria or archaea. Read more.

003–CS: Clinical Microbiology Board Review Course

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

This session will review the basic principles of clinical microbiology, including an overview of diagnostic bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology and immunoserology. Learn more

004–WS: Compliance for the Microbiologist: What You Need to Know before Your Next Inspection

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

As regulations on the clinical microbiology laboratory change, is it important to keep up to date to stay compliant. This session will discuss being prepared for a College of American Pathologists inspection, best practices in proficiency testing, and an update on IQCP. Read more.

005–WS: The Microbes are Still Winning: Antibiotic Resistance, Detection, Distribution and Epidemiology

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The detection of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria remains one of the greatest challenges to clinical microbiologists and Infectious Disease specialists. The bacteria are winning. Attend this workshop to determine where you, your practice, and your lab are with respect to staying ahead of the "mutation curve". Learn more

006–WS: Microbe Analysis Using R

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The workshop will cover the use of a variety of R packages useful for the analysis of 16S rRNA amplicon data. These analysis are built around PhyloSeq data objects and extend on basic concepts in microbiome analysis such as alpha and beta diversity with inclusion of advanced material on differential abundance testing, feature selection and time-series analysis. 007–WS: Mining Microbial and Viral Genomes and Metagenomes for Biotechnological Applications using IMG

Session Type: Full-Day

Time: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Discover the Joint Genome Institute’s “Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG)” user interface for comparative analysis of isolate genomes and metagenomes, as well as “IMG/VR” for viral sequence-based discovery. Use case scenarios addressing research questions in bioremediation, biofuels, viral ecogenomics, and more, will be presented. Learn more

008–CS: Antimicrobial Stewardship: Beyond the Basics (Organized in Cooperation with the Society of Infectious Diseases Pharmacists [SIDP])

Session Type: Half-Day

Time: 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The purpose of the antimicrobial stewardship workshop is to educate the audience on ways to enhance existing antimicrobial stewardship programs. Learn more

009–WS: Beginning Bioinformatics: An Introduction to the Command Line

Session Type: Half-Day

Time: 12:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Bioinformatics tools are an increasingly important part of microbiology, and many of the most popular tools run on the command line. In this half-day hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basics of working on the command line, including navigating directories, working with files, and installing and running a software package. Learn more.

*Note: The 2018 program is forthcoming.

Wednesday, June 6, 2018 ǀ 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 7, 2018 ǀ 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

The Microbe Academy for Professional Development (MAPD) will be held prior to ASM Microbe on Wednesday, June 6 – Thursday, June 7, 2018. The academy is designed to equip community college, undergraduate, post baccalaureate and graduate students in the microbial sciences with skills needed to:

  • transition successfully to professional society meetings,
  • make a successful presentation,
  • meet and network with peers who share similar interest in microbiology,
  • build on networking opportunities with faculty mentors who are also members of ASM,
  • gain professional development training, and
  • strengthen mentoring relationships with research and academic advisors.

Faculty facilitators will provide students with personalized feedback and coaching in one-on-one and group settings and discuss mentoring and career tips to ensure success in microbial science careers.
