ASM Thank You Letter to Congress for FY 2017 Omnibus Spending Bill

The Honorable Roy Blunt
United States Senate
260 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510-2402

Dear Senator Blunt:

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) thanks members of Congress and congressional leaders of the House and Senate Appropriations committees for increasing funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the fiscal year 2017 Omnibus Budget Bill (HR 244).   The $2 billion increase for NIH will help to ensure that biomedical research continues to discover new cures, treatments and preventions for the infectious and chronic diseases that cause human illness and death. This increase in funding recognizes the need for NIH to restore lost capacity of over 20 percent in funding research over the past decade because of budget cuts and sequestration. We are also grateful that Congress has increased funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), US Department of Agriculture research and the Department of Energy Office of Science. The funding increases for science and public health in the FY 2017 omnibus are greatly appreciated at this time of unparalleled scientific opportunity and we urge Congress to continue a bipartisan, bicameral strong national commitment to research and public health.
