ASM Letter of Congratulations to New CDC Director

July 13, 2017

Brenda Fitzgerald, M.D.
Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
1600 Clifton Road
Atlanta, Georgia 30333

Dear Dr. Fitzgerald:

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offers its congratulations on your recent appointment as the new Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The ASM is eager to assist and support you and the entire CDC in implementing the Agency’s crucial programs to protect health and safety, both in the United States and worldwide. We appreciate your multifaceted experience as a physician and a public health official, including leadership in professional societies, university training in microbiology, service in the US military, and as Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health. Your past efforts advocating preventive immunization programs, halting the spread of Zika virus, launching a statewide program to improve the appropriate use of antibiotics, and reducing healthcare associated infections are closely aligned with the interests of the ASM. The ASM has a long history of working with CDC in these areas plus those of global health security and preparedness. We are particularly concerned that CDC maintain its support and leadership positions in these areas.

The ASM looks forward to your leadership of the CDC and the Agency’s commitment to preserving and promoting public health, including the rigorous prevention of infectious diseases and other biothreats requiring science based countermeasures. Please do not hesitate to call on the ASM for assistance.
