Travel Awards & Fellowships

ASM offers Travel Awards to help offset the costs of attending its meetings and conferences. Below is a list of awards available by each meeting/conference, their eligibility requirements and application deadlines.

ASM Microbe

Outstanding Abstract Awards

Sponsored by ASM and determined by the ASM Microbe Program Committee, these awards highlight outstanding abstracts presented by students, residents, or medical/clinical fellows. All abstracts submitted by the deadline will be considered for these awards. Awards will include a cash prize of $200.

Infectious Disease Fellows Program 

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: Recipients will receive support for travel expenses (coach airfare, hotel, ASM Microbe registration, and breakfast on designated days) for the length of ASM Microbe 2018.  

Description: This program offers Fellows engaged in clinical infectious diseases, medical diagnostic microbiology, or infectious disease pharmacy a unique opportunity to attend ASM Microbe 2018 and participate in an experience specifically tailored to their education development needs. This select group will have the opportunity to hear keynote talks targeted to them, participate in mentored poster talks, receive overviews of recommended sessions for attendance, interact with ASM Microbe 2018 Program Committee members, and be given personalized attention, including daily discussions to help them maximize their educational and career development experience.

A subcommittee of the ASM Microbe 2018 Program Committee will select qualifying fellows both from the U.S. and internationally. Recipients will be contacted following their acceptance by ASM staff to assist in making their travel arrangements. Housing will be provided for all participants of this program and an itinerary of events for the week will be shared prior to arrival at the meeting.

Participants from the previous 2 years are not eligible for this award, and alternatively are encouraged to apply for the ASM Infectious Diseases (ID) Travel Award.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be (at the time of application):

  • A current ASM member at the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to ASM Microbe 2018.
    • Please note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.
  • Must meet one of these three qualifications: (1) have an MD and be actively enrolled in a clinical infectious diseases fellowship, (2) have an MD or PhD and be actively enrolled in a clinical microbiology fellowship, or (3) have a PharmD degree and be actively enrolled in an infectious disease pharmacy subspecialty training program.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last two years.

ASM Infectious Disease (ID) Travel Award

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: $1,000 per awardee

Description: The Travel Award Committee will award a limited number of travel awards to support recipients' travel to ASM Microbe 2018. Recipients will be honored as a "George McCracken Infectious Disease Fellow."

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be: 

  • A current ASM member at the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to ASM Microbe 2018.
    • Please note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018. 
  • A PhD or MD enrolled in an ID Fellowship Program at the time of application.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last two years.

ASM Student and Postdoctoral Travel Award

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: $500 for North American residents (U.S., Mexico, and Canada) and $750 for International residents.

Description: Travel awards are selected by the Travel Award Committee on the basis of the scientific quality of the submitted abstracts. Funding from this award is meant only to defray travel costs for ASM Microbe; applicants may need to obtain additional funding from other sources.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last two years.
  • Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Travel Award for Scientists from Low and Low-Middle Income Countries

Amount: Recipients will receive support for travel expenses (ASM Microbe registration, coach airfare, ground transportation to and from the airport, hotel expenses, and meals) for the length of ASM Microbe 2018. 

Description: The travel award program was created for scientists from low and low-middle income countries to attend ASM Microbe 2018. 

A subcommittee from the Program Committee will review and accept abstract submissions from scientists in low and low-middle income countries who would otherwise be unable to attend the meeting because they would not be able to raise the funds necessary for travel expenses. Many of these individuals are working in areas that have a high-burden of disease and would benefit greatly from the scientific content presented at the meeting, as well as gain significant value from networking with their colleagues from around the world. 

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be: 

  • A current ASM member by the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A resident of a low income or low-middle income country, as defined by the World Bank.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to ASM Microbe 2018.
    • Please note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.

The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Award

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: $500 per awardee

Description: The Richard and Mary Finkelstein Student Travel Award will provide support for students attending ASM Microbe 2018. Each awardee will present a poster in addition to being invited to give a short presentation of the abstract during the meeting. Only one travel award will be granted per laboratory.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract in the area of microbial pathogenesis to ASM Microbe 2018.
    • Please Note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.
  • An Undergraduate or pre-doctoral student; PhD or MD within two years of graduation at the time of the meeting; or an MD in a residency or fellowship program within six years of receipt of the MD degree at the time of the meeting.
  • Not previously a recipient of the award within the last two years.

Carlyn Halde Latin American Student Travel Award 

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: Up to $1,200 to defray expenses associated with travel to the ASM Microbe 2018. Allowable expenses are meeting registration, roundtrip economy airfare and lodging. If the cost of the travel and registration is under $1,200 the remaining funds may be used to cover other expenses related to meeting attendance.

Description: This travel award, administered by ASM in collaboration with the Medical Mycological Society of the Americas (MMSA), supports the travel of a student medical microbiologist from Latin America, Puerto Rico or the Caribbean to participate in ASM Microbe 2018. This award is funded by an endowment from long time ASM and MMSA member Dr. Carlyn Halde. The awardee will attend the MMSA meeting and dinner held in conjunction with ASM Microbe 2018. The recipient would also be asked to give a short talk on medical mycology at his or her institution.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to ASM Microbe 2018.
  • Please Note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.
  • Accepted to present an abstract in the following sub-tracks at the ASM Microbe 2018.
  • A medical microbiology undergraduate student, graduate student, or PhD or MD (whose degree has been awarded after June 2017 but before May 2018) from Latin America, Puerto Rico or the Caribbean.

ASM Microbe Minority Travel Award

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: Each awardee will be offered up to $1000 to defray expenses associated with travel to the ASM Microbe 2018. Allowable expenses are meeting registration, roundtrip economy airfare and lodging.

Description: This travel award encourages increased participation of underrepresented minority (URM)* groups in the ASM Microbe 2018. ASM will select faculty, post-doctoral scholars or graduate students from URM groups in the microbiological sciences or faculty from Minority Serving Institutions.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be:

  • A current ASM member at the time of the ASM Microbe 2018 meeting
  • Applicants must be from one of the targeted groups:
    • Faculty from a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), such as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), Hispanic Serving institutions (HSI), and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU)
    • Faculty from Community Colleges
    • URM Faculty regardless of institutional type
    • URM Post-doctoral Scholars
    • URM Graduate Students
  • US citizen
  • Positioned to have access to students from URM groups pursuing areas related to the microbiological sciences.
  • Experienced in training and mentoring minority students (URM postdoctoral fellows can be selected in this category because of their potential to serve as role models and mentors for URMs training at their institutions.)
  • Committed to research in microbiology and related sciences.
  • Committed to diversity.
  • Committed to volunteer services.

*Underrepresented Minority (URM) Groups  U.S. citizens of racial and ethnic minority groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research, such as blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaskan Natives, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders.

  • One page statement giving a brief description of your research, teaching and mentoring activities (1 page)
  • Letter attesting to your research, teaching and service commitments from an appropriate college or university official (chair, dean)

ASM-FEMS Mäkelä-Cassell Travel Award for Early Career Scientists

Deadline: January 16, 2018

Amount: Up to €4,000 for FEMS members traveling to ASM Microbe 2018.

Description: This award recognized future leaders in microbiology by supporting travel for early career scientists to present a poster of their research at ASM Microbe 2018.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must be: 

  • A current member of FEMS Member Society.
  • A current PhD (or equivalent) student or recipient of PhD within the past five years.
  • A presenting author on an accepted abstract to ASM Microbe 2018.
    • Please Note: Applications are to be submitted prior to knowing whether your abstract has been accepted for ASM Microbe 2018.

Submission Requirements:

  • Brief bio (abbreviated CV)
  • Synopsis of research that demonstrates the depth of the applicant’s research experience.

ASM New Tech Professional Development Award Program

Deadline: January 19, 2018

Amount: $1,500

Description: This grant is designed to inspire beginning non-doctoral level clinical microbiologists to get more engaged in our profession by attending the 2018 ASM Microbe meeting. The award will be used for the meeting registration fee and to help defray travel expenses. During the meeting you will interact with a pre-assigned mentor, attend symposia, visit poster sessions, peruse industry-sponsored exhibits featuring the latest technological advances, have the opportunity to network with other new and "seasoned" microbiologists and learn more about the profession of microbiology.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the applicant must: 

  • Have worked as a clinical microbiologist in a clinical microbiology laboratory for more than one and less than five years at the time of application submission
  • Be a non-doctoral level professional
  • Be an ASM member
  • Have never attended an ASM General Meeting
  • Not be presenting a poster or talk at the 2018 meeting

Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)

ABRCMS Student Travel Award

Application: CLOSED

The ABRCMS Student Travel Award provides undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students up to $1,500 to cover conference registration, housing, and/or travel (airfare). If accepted into the program, ABRCMS will provide further instructions on booking travel and hotel. Travel/hotel booked outside of the ABRCMS block will not be reimbursed. Graduate students and postdoctoral scientists are not eligible to apply.

ABRCMS Judge Travel Award

Application: CLOSED

Postdoctoral scientists and faculty members available to judge all poster and oral sessions scheduled throughout the conference and mentor students are eligible to apply for the ABRCMS Judge Travel Award. The award provides full and partial awards to cover conference registration, airfare, and/or housing for 4 nights at a conference hotel. Preference will be given to active researchers in any of the twelve scientific disciplines represented at the conference. If accepted into the program, ABRCMS will provide further instructions on booking travel and hotel. Travel/hotel booked outside of the ABRCMS block will not be reimbursed. New and returning judges are eligible to apply

ASMCUE Travel Award

The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) offers a travel award to increase faculty's knowledge and skills in the microbiological sciences.  A second goal of the program is to increase participation from a larger group of biology faculty to work closely with ASM to improve undergraduate microbiology in the 21st century. Please check back for information regarding the travel award for the 2018 conference.

ASM Travel Awards for students and early career scientists

Students and early career scientists who submit an abstract are eligible to request a CVS Travel Award. The deadline for requests is February 9, 2018, 5:00 p.m. ET.

Description: Travel awardees are selected by the CVS Program Committee on the basis of the scientific quality of the submitted abstracts. Funding from this award is meant only to defray costs for the meeting; abstract submitters may need to obtain additional funding from other sources.

Amount: $250

Eligibility: Preference for travel awards will be given to students and early career scientists.

PASCV Awards

PASCV provides awards to students, postdoctoral fellows and technologists who have abstracts accepted to the Clinical Virology Symposium showing excellence in the field of clinical virology. PASCV will present these awards immediately following the Molecular Virology Workshop. After receiving their awards, the recipients will present their work in 10 minute talk. Awardees will also be introduced as a group during CVS when the ASM Travel Awards are announced. The award consists of a prize of $2000, a plaque, and complimentary registration to the Molecular Virology Workshop.

Submissions must include:

  • An eligibility letter from supervisor. Letter must include the name of the student, fellow, or technologist who is competing for the travel award, and abstract title.
  • Copy of abstract submitted to the Clinical Virology Symposium
  • Travel Award application form

Applicant must:

  • Be able to attend the Molecular Virology Workshop* and present a brief 10 minute presentation during the award presentation
  • Be the presenting author of an abstract accepted to the Clinical Virology Symposium
  • Be a student, post-doctoral fellow, or technologist

ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF)

Deadline: February 15, 2018

Amount: Fellows will receive up to $4,000 in stipend and up to $2,000 in travel funds to attend the 2019 Microbe Academy for Professional Development prior to ASM Microbe 2019 and present their research at the meeting (contingent upon abstract acceptance). Allowable expenses are registration, lodging, and airfare.

Description: The fellowship provides undergraduate, community college, and post-baccalaureate students the opportunity to perform 10-12 weeks of summer research with an ASM faculty member, in addition to receiving professional development training at the 2019 Microbe Academy for Professional Development (MAPD) prior to ASM Microbe 2019.

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the student applicants must be:

  • ASM Member
  • U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or DACA eligible
  • Enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate student during the 2018-2019 academic year at an accredited U.S. institution
  • Involved in a research project
  • Have an ASM member at your home institution willing to serve as a mentor
  • Not receiving other financial support for research (i.e., Council for Undergraduate Research, Minority Access to Research Careers, Sigma Xi) during the fellowship

Eligible faculty mentors must:

  • Be an ASM Member
  • Have not had a student receive the ASM-URF in the previous two fellowship years
  • Have an appointment at the same institution as the student applicant
  • Have an ongoing research project

Description: The fellowship provides undergraduate, community college, post-baccalaureate, master’s and senior-level doctoral students from underrepresented minority groups to gain professional development training at the 2018 Microbe Academy for Professional Development and receive funding to attend and present their research at the ASM Microbe 2018 meeting (contingent upon abstract acceptance).

Eligibility: To qualify for consideration the student applicants must be:

  • ASM Member
  • U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or DACA eligible
  • From an underrepresented minority group
  • Have conducted research in the microbiological sciences
  • Submitted an abstract for presentation at ASM Microbe
  • Research mentor is an ASM member (does not apply to the community college, undergraduate, and post-baccalaureate track)
