Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Receive Summer Research Stipend

The fellowship awards $4,000 to undergraduate, community college, and post-baccalaureate students to perform 10-12 weeks of summer research. Also, awardees submit their research for presentation at ASM Microbe 2020. If their abstract is accepted, they receive up to $2,000 in travel funds to attend the Microbe Academy for Professional Development prior to the meeting and present their research at the meeting.

Program Benefits

Eligibility

You are eligible, if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • ASM member
  • U.S. Citizen, permanent resident, or DACA eligible
  • Enrolled as full-time matriculating undergraduate student during the 2019-2020 academic year at an accredited U.S. institution
  • Involved in a research project
  • Have an ASM member at your home institution willing to serve as a mentor
  • Not receiving other financial support for research (i.e., Council for Undergraduate Research, Minority Access to Research Careers, Sigma Xi) during the fellowship

Eligible faculty mentors must:

  • Be an ASM member
  • Have not had a student receive the ASM-URF in the previous two fellowship years
  • Have an appointment at the same institution as the student applicant
  • Have an ongoing research project

Preference will be given to institutions and/or faculty with limited resources and those supporting underrepresented minority groups (URM) in the microbial sciences. The program supports research in all areas of the microbial sciences.

Apply by February 15. The program requires a joint application from you and your faculty research mentor, both parts must be completed by the deadline. 

Your portion of the application requires:

  • ASM member number
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement

Your faculty mentor's portion of the application requires:

  • ASM member number
  • Overview of project
  • Mentoring and professional goals
  • Description of current laboratory

You will be notified of the status of your application in late April/early May.
