South Africa Resized

ASM has worked closely with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s International Laboratory Branch/Division of Global HIV/AIDS and the African Centre for Integrated Laboratory Training (ACILT) since 2008 to effectively deliver training courses at ACILT to help strengthen laboratory diagnosis skills to front-line laboratory staff from resource-limited countries. The overarching goal of ACILT is to provide training courses to develop a competent laboratory workforce and stronger laboratories to detect and monitor patients for HIV, TB, and Malaria.

ASM has successfully provided qualified TB lab expert consultants to serve as course co-facilitators and participant mentors for TB Culture Detection & Identification and TB Drug Susceptibility Testing for Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Complex (MTBC) related training.

Contributing to Evaluating the Effectiveness of ACILT

ACILT has been running for seven years and has conducted over 100 training courses for more than 1,300 participants from 40 resource-limited countries. ASM, per the request of CDC, has successfully assisted CDC and ACILT with the creation of a comprehensive Protocol that will provide a strategy for evaluating the impact of the training courses provided by ACILT. The Protocol seeks to identify the factors that contribute directly or incidentally to achieving effective transfer of learning in the workplace and measure the extent of training impact. The Protocol is expected to be implemented in 2015.

BioResource Centers (BRCs)

The purpose of the BioResource Center (BRC) is to provide scientists, educators, laboratorians, policy makers, and students with cutting-edge scientific resources, training, and increase their knowledge-base of biological sciences. The BRC in South Africa serves as a location for scientists and stakeholder to convene; offers access to cutting-edge scientific resources; and provides ongoing professional development training through scientific webinars, virtual workshops, and also on-site workshops and lectures.
